Fishing Afloat
A Book for Sea Anglers and Offshore Sailors

My book Fishing Afloat is loaded with fish-catching tips and techniques for saltwater boat anglers on both sides of the Atlantic – and for those yachtsmen sailing across it.

The information contained within Fishing Afloat is drawn from many years of fishing around the coast of the UK – including cod fishing in the North Sea, wreck fishing off the South Coast, and general boat fishing in the wonderful Western Isles of Scotland.

In later years, realisation having dawned that wind was a lot cheaper than two-stroke, I converted to sail and ventured further afield – across the Bay of Biscay where I caught my first tuna on a trolled hand-line - then south through the deep waters off the coast of Spain and Portugal.

Turning left at Cape St Vincent saw me through the Straits of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean for more pelagic gamefish, bottom-dwelling demersal fish, bass and sea-bream.

Then the big one - back through the Straits of Gibralter, south to Madeira and the Canary Islands, then west across three thousand miles of open Atlantic Ocean to the tropical waters of the Caribbean.

More tuna, wahoo, kingfish, dorado, and bonefish, barracuda, tarpon, snapper, grouper, jacks, pompano …

And you know what? The basic boat fishing techniques work everywhere. It’s a very portable skill, fishing. It’s not where you do it, but how you do it.

And it’s all in Fishing Afloat.

But review my own book? No thanks. I can hear "Well, he would say that, wouldn't he?" echoing through the electronic airwaves already.

So I'll stop right here - and mention nothing of the great colour pics drawn by the skilled hand of Andrew Simpson. Nor of the clear and informative text, or the digi-pics taken by the steady hand of my long-suffering partner Mary Swift.

About the Publisher …

The Royal Yachting Association is the UK's national body for all forms of boating – not just for ‘yachties’, but for all of us that mess around in boats – and that includes us saltwater fishermen.

Whilst the RYA won’t teach you to fish, they can teach you to operate a boat safely and with confidence whilst you’re doing so.

But along with their training courses and associated publications, they’re now publishing a number of books about the various aspects of saltwater fishing.

Of course, you don't have to be a member to buy them but membership will get you a 15% discount on books and many other products from the RYA Shop.

Combined with the other benefits you can enjoy, it makes membership a lot of sense.

Downrigger ~ The cranelike device incorporating a line-counter reel often seen on the sterns of sport-fishing boats, which lowers a trolling weight on a wire line to a pre-determined depth. The trolling line is attached just above the weight, which gets the lure down to depths that would otherwise be unachievable.
